Privacy Policy

This reinforces or explains in more detail information which is already available on the Members area of the TecHKnow Website. It is repeated here merely as reference

TecHKnow WiKi is an open source community which has at its central aim the desire to gather, collate and distribute science and technical information, help, advice etc., for use by anybody within the technician community or anybody else who has a vested interest in our profession.

If you only read the TecHKnow Wiki articles on this website area, then no more information is collected than is typically collected in server logs by web sites in general. Simply visiting us does not expose your identity publicly.

If you are logged in, you will be identified by your user name. This may be your real name if you so choose, or you may choose to publish under a pseudonym, whatever user name you selected when you created your account. If you have not logged in, you will be identified by your network IP address. This is a series of four numbers which identifies the Internet address from which you are contacting the wiki. Depending on your connection, this number may be traceable only to a large Internet service provider, or specifically to your school, place of business, or home. It may be possible that the origin of this IP address could be used in conjunction with any interests you express implicitly or explicitly by editing articles to identify you even by private individuals.

When using a pseudonym, your IP address will not be available to the public except in cases of abuse, including vandalism of a wiki page by you or by another user with the same IP address. In all cases, your IP address will be stored on the wiki servers and can be seen by TecHKnow Wiki administrators only. Your IP address, and its connection to any usernames that share it may be released under certain circumstances eg., in the event of any legal claim been brought against TecHKnow.

If you contribute to the Wikimedia projects, you are publishing every word you post publicly. If you write something, assume that it will be retained forever. This includes articles, user pages and talk pages.

What personal information do we collect? TecHKnow Wiki requires users to register with this area of the website. Some examples of information TecHKnow Wiki will collect are your name and email address. Your computers IP address is recorded automatically during each visit.

Protecting your privacy We will take appropriate steps to protect your privacy. We will not provide any of your personal information to other companies or individuals. Please remember to exercise a certain amount of caution in revealing information about yourself in a public area.

TecHKnow Wiki authors and editors may provide links to third party sites. Since we do not control those websites, we encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third party sites.

Use of cookies TecHKnow uses cookies for various reasons. Cookies enable us to provide a better service to our members by allowing complete access to the entire WIKI area. You can disable cookies from within your browser. You will still be allowed to browse the site. However you will find that you will not be able to log in or post any material to the Wiki site. Cookies will be deleted when you close your browser session.

'Engaging in undesirable activities' If you are considered to be engaging in undesirable activities that could affect the security, or function of this Wiki, the administration staff will use technical measures to block you from accessing either this part of the TecHKnow website or the entire website.

As a final resort we will have no hesitation in submitting any information that we may have about you to your Internet Service provider (ISP), Workplace IT Administrator and/or legal advisers with a view to pursuing a legal action through the courts.

If you have any questions about our privacy policy then you are welcome to contact the TecHKnow Administrator Mr. Seamus Smith by email at
