Using Maths Functions on TecHKnow Wiki

From TecHKnow Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

There are two ways of incorporating mathematical formulas (or a series of symbols) into your article. The first method is probably familiar to many wikipedians and this involves inserting a graphic image of the formula in to the article using the Upload file link on the toolbox.

Example

The second method involves the use of character sets. For technical reasons it is not possible to encorporate a maths editor into TecHKnow Wiki. However, it is possible to use HTML (Web technology) to place maths symbols or special characters and perhaps create basic mathematical formulas with a little bit of patience. This article is not intended to go into the details of HTML ISO character sets.

General background

Basically, every alphanumeric and numeric character that you type on a computer screen has a special ISO code.

Below is an example list of some maths symbols and the codes which you could use in an article. By selecting the right symbol and code from the list below you can include these symbols in your article.

For a better explanation of the meaning of these characters and why they are used you should visit ISO 8859-1 character set overview

For example; To place the formula for the Area of a circle in an article;

Step One. - Check the table below for the various symbols that you will require and take a note of its code.
Step Two - You can group codes together. Codes must finish with a semi-colon (;) so, a code generally takes the format of {code;code;) - without of course the brackets!

So in our example;

πr² would be written in your article as &#x3C0 r&sup2 with the semi-colon between and at the end of the code.

Other useful examples of code

√   &#x221A

xⁿ   x&#x207F

µ   &#x00b5

β   &#x03b2

±   &#x00b1

λ   &#x3BB

e   &#101

α   &#x3B1

4x³   4x&#179

δ   &#x3B4

ω   &#x3C9

@   &#z0040

An example of forming an expression

η₁ = k ρ₁ t₁   &#x03b7 &#x2081 = k &#x03c1 &#x2081 t&#x2081

Suffixes 1 to 4 have the codes 2081 to 2084 so to change the above: η₁ to η₂

the code for ₁   &#x2081

Changes to: ₂   &#x2082

How these characters (especially the less frequently used ones) are displayed may vary with font and the browser you use.

It may be easier to use the < and > marks around sub and /unsub at front and rear of your intended subscript:

Test subscript  Test subscript

and deletions can be shown similarly: deleted    <del>deleted</del>

Other sources of help include a maths online formula tool which can greatly assist in determining what code to use.
