Hot Air Balloon
We purchased the standard 'Hot Air Balloon' kit from Philip Harris
I set about assembling it in the following way:
Take one 'kit' bought from a scientific catalogue...
Stick bits together...
Repeat x 8...
Fold...
Apply template and clothes pegs...
Cut and then stick lots of bits together (too complicated to explain although this bit in the instructions is fairly clear)
Make an octagon out of straws...
Stick in balloon...
Obtain inflation device (Head of Science's heater is ideal for this)...
Up...
Up...
...and away!
Tips, well don't use a glue stick! As it dries, it causes the tissue to come apart. You need nice sharp scissors, and allow plenty of time. It's not something which can be done in small windows of lab time. I made ours in the holiday and it took me a day.
Ours flies in the lab over a fan heater. We're going to take it onto the field in the summer and fly it properly, however it is very delicate so it's not going to last long.
